April 24, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Display Devices Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a new aluminum reflective thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LC

The new display features a large 13.3-in. screen and uses an aluminum alloy to reflect an outside light source to brighten the screen. This innovation eliminates the nee
d for a back light source and cuts power consumption by a third, company officials explained.
The company also said the microscopic cell structure of the liquid crystals is designed to maximize natural color display and increase the viewing angle to 160 degrees h
orizontally.
Among domestic companies, Samsung Display Devices is the first to develop the reflective TFT-LCD screen. Several Japanese companies already have released such high-techn
ology screens.
However, the Japanese makers have yet to manufacture such products on a commercial basis, the company added.
Samsung Display Devices expects that a 2 trillion won (US$1.45 billion) reflective screen market will emerge in Korea by 2000, supported by the expansion of the market f
or portable electronic devices, including electronic notepads and small video game machines.
