  • PC Sales Dropped in 1st Week of July Prior to Launch of Windows 98
  • August 3, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales began to slow in July, apparently because consumers slashed their purchases in anticipation of the debut of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 98 operating system.
According to Gfk Japan Ltd., an information service company that handles point-of-sales (POS) data from 54 home electric appliance sales firms, PC sales at about 2,000 appliance retailers during the first week of July (July 6 through July 12, 1998) fell 1.2 percent in volume as compared with the previous week and were down 2.3 percent in value.

It was the first time in eight weeks that declines in week-to-week comparisons were recorded both in terms of volume and value.

However, as compared with the same week a year ago (July 7-13, 1997), sales increased 10.2 percent in volume but dropped 1.1 percent in value.

In value, year-on-year sales decreased for the first time in six weeks. The average PC sales price was 221,054 yen (US$1,509), down 2,490 yen (US$17) from the previous week's 223,544 yen. The price decline was particularly strong with notebook PCs, dropping by almost 5,000 yen (US$35).

At stores, the effect of the wait-and-see attitude in anticipation of Windows 98 was more pronounced with notebook types than with desktop PCs.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan picked the 41 in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
