Toshiba, Yazaki to Team Up For Auto Information Systems
|
August 6, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Toshiba Corp. and Yazaki Corp., a major maker
of automotive wire harnesses, have agreed to collaborate to develop
and sell so-called Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for cars.
|
ITS is a comprehensive auto information system that provides cars with
a navigation service and offers an automatic vehicle location and tracking
service. The system will be introduced on highways and other roads from
2000.
The two companies will focus on commercializing ITS-related equipment
and systems at an early stage and making joint proposals to automakers
for developing system devices.
They will develop an automatic toll collection system. Using the new
system, highway tolls can be collected without forcing drivers to stop
their cars.
Toshiba and Yazaki also will sell an optimized vehicle-allocation system
combined with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a wireless service
for business use.
Total annual sales for the ITS-related services for both firms are estimated
at about 50 billion yen (US$345 million) in five years and about 120
billion yen (US$828 million) in 10 years.
