  • Hitachi to Mass Produce 40 mm2 64Mb DRAM in '99
  • August 7, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Hitachi Ltd. said it plans to start mass production of 64Mb dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with a chip area less than 40mm2 at its "N2" Naka plant in Ibaraki from early 1999.
Current most mass produced 64Mb DRAMs have a chip area of 80-100 mm2.

Hitachi plans to increase cost competitiveness by shrinking a chip area of 64Mb DRAM using manufacturing equipment for the 0.18 micron design rule. The company has already introduced manufacturing equipment for 0.18 micron.

A sample chip is planned at the end of 1998. Hitachi's Singapore plant also plans to start production of 64Mb DRAMs using the manufacturing equipment for 0.18 micron in early 1999.
