  • Samsung Elecs. Focuses on Fiber Optic Technology
  • August 10, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said it will promote its fiber optic cable and equipment manufacturing division into one of its core business lines in the near future.
The move is in line with the increasing use of fiber optic communications in Korea and elsewhere.

The world's largest memory chip maker said yesterday it will turn itself into a major fiber optic technology holder in the 21st century.

The company said last month it has already secured the key technology to draw out a 360 km-long optical fiber, the single longest of its kind ever produced in the world.

The company said it will also focus its efforts on making various fiber optic devices smaller and cheaper by embedding high-capacity semiconductors into individual products.

With many countries are scrambling to establish their information highways, demands for advanced fiber optic cables and related equipment are on the rise.

Samsung Electronics said it expects the global market to be worth US$35 billion by 2005.
