  • China to Boost Support for High Technology Development
  • August 13, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China's central government decided to adopt more effective measures to support the development of high-technology ventures, according to Vice-Premier Li Lanqing.
Li, who also is a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, called for the early establishment of a risk investment system for high-tech ventures and the listing of profitable high-tech ventures.

He said that the 21st century will have a knowledge-based economy and that technology is expected to become a pillar industry. Also, Li noted that future economic growth will depend on the performance of high-tech industries.

Li urged the commercialization of more high-tech programs to create new job opportunities. He said that he expects high-tech industries to help upgrade state-owned ventures and lead the development of the nation's economy.

China has established 53 high-tech development zones and high-tech ventures, providing jobs for at least 2.87 million people.
