CMC Magnetics Seen Becoming World's Largest CD-R Disc Maker
|
August 14, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Based on increasing demand, CMC Magnetics
Corp. expects to raise its monthly CD-R disc output to a level of 12
million units by the end of 1998.
|
The company would then become the largest CD-R disc manufacturer in the
world.
CMC already is the world's top maker of 3.5-in. floppy discs. The company
produces about 60 million units of 3.5-in. floppy discs a month, or
20 million units at its U.K. plant and 40 million units at its Taiwan
factory.
CMC executives said that in the first quarter, the company's monthly
CD-R disc output remained stable at 2 million units. The number increased
to 6 million in the second quarter, and the company thus had a first-half
output of more than 24 million units. CMC estimates that its production
of CD-R discs will reach 60 million units for all of 1998.
To cope with rising demand, CMC, which already has 34 CD-R disc production
lines, has decided to add four or five lines each month in the near
future. Such additions would boost the company's monthly output by more
than 1 million units. The company expects to have more than 60 new production
lines by the end of this year, to increase its monthly output to 12
million units.
According to statistics from the Photonics Industry and Development Association,
Taiwan obtained about 40 percent of the global CD-R disc market in 1997,
second only to Japan. Because Japanese rivals have suspended their plans
to expand factories, Taiwan has a good chance of ascending to the No.
1 position this year.
