  • Japan PC Sales Rise on Windows 98 Release
  • August 17, 1998 (TOKYO) -- The Japanese personal computer market regained its vitality after Windows 98 hit the market in the third week of July.
According to statistics compiled by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company handling point-of-sales data, PC sales at about 2,000 electric appliance stores during the third week of July (July 20-26, 1998) surged 32.6 percent on the unit basis and 22.2 percent on the value basis from the corresponding week of last year (July 21-27, 1997) (See table).

Compared with the second week of July, PC sales increased 17.5 percent on a unit basis and 19.2 percent in value. The average sales price was 226,545 yen (US$1,550), up 3,228 yen from 223,317 yen (US$1,530) for the second week.

Sales of notebook PCs grew sharply, posting a 65.4-percent year-on-year increase on a unit basis. Desktop PCs posted a 10.6 percent year-on-year gain. This is the first time since the beginning of 1998 that both notebook and desktop PCs registered double-digit, year-on-year growth.

Industry sources attribute the steep growth of desktop PC sales to two major factors: the release of Windows 98 expanded demand for mini-tower PCs and space-saving desktop PCs began selling well on the individual-user market after the prices of liquid-crystal display (LCD) monitors dropped.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan picked the 41 first in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a far greater number of outlets with combined unit-base sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
