Motorola to Invest US$225M in Joint Venture in Sichuan

August 18, 1998 (CHENGDU, China) -- Motorola Inc. of the United States
will invest US$225 million in southwest China's Sichuan province for
the third-phase expansion project of Leshan-Phoenix Semiconductor Co.,
Ltd.

The company is the first joint venture between Motorola and China. When
the expansion project is completed, the company's annual output of semiconductor
devices will increase from 2.5 billion units to 7.5 billion units.
Also, the plant will produce 1 billion integrated circuits and 250 million
transistors a year.
A Motorola official said that the company is satisfied with its cooperation
with Sichuan, and plans to build a venture for production of electronic
spare parts and semiconductors at the Chengdu New and High-tech Development
Zone.
Sichuan has approved 6,740 foreign-funded projects, which have a total
contract value of US$8.1 billion.
