Otsuka Shokai Provides NEC, IBM Japan Servers With Linux
|
August 18, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Otsuka Shokai Co., Ltd., a major Japanese
information equipment trading company, said that it started selling
PC servers made by NEC Corp. and IBM Japan Ltd. with Linux freeware
UNIX.
|
Otsuka Shokai said that the new product is called Linux Server Solution
and is aimed for the name server, mail server and Web server markets,
which are used for Internet access, as well as for intranet servers
for offices and shared file/printer servers.
The reason for using Linux is its low price compared to installing Microsoft
Corp.'s Windows NT and because of system reliability.
The PC servers are in NEC's Express5800 and IBM Japan's NetFinity series.
Otsuka Shokai is selling three models in each series.
Otsuka Shokai pre-installs Linux and software for users and also provides
support service. NEC and IBM Japan charge for hardware maintenance.
