  • [Windows 98 in Asia]Korea's Computer Sales Surge with Hangul Windows 98
  • August 19, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Personal computer sales in Korea increased dramatically amid a dull domestic market following the Aug. 11 launch of Hangul Windows 98.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said it received more than 9,000 orders from sales agencies since it released its two newest processor models, the Celeron and M5200, on Aug. 6.

A company spokesman said the sudden increase in orders goes hand-in-hand with the rising demand for computers with Hangul Windows 98 installed. He added that the company has already launched full-scale production at its Suwon factory.

Another computer firm, Sambo Computer Co., said sales of its "Change-up 4380" and "4370" models have increased by 30 percent since the release of Hangul Windows 98.

Computer component makers, however, said components such as sound cards and graphic cards which help facilitate Hangul Windows 98 have not posted a sales increase.

Industry watchers said sales of computer components will gradually increase as Hangul Windows 98 becomes standardized.

Sales of Hangul Windows 98 topped 27,000 units within the first three days of its release.
