  • Oki Electric to Close U.S. Microchip Assembly Plant
  • August 27, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. said it will shut down a microchip assembly plant at its U.S. subsidiary in Oregon as of Sept. 30.
Oki Electric aims to cut down costs by shutting down and consolidating its assembly bases. The company will pay severance pay to Oki Semiconductor Manufacturing Group's 126 employees and will assist them in seeking new jobs.

The plant has been engaged in microchip assembly and testing. At the present time, its production capacity is 1 million 16Mb DRAMs per month and 50,000 microcontrollers per month.

After the closing, the assembly process will be transferred to Oki (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and to plants in Japan.

The company's sales, marketing and design departments will continue to operate in the state of California.
