  • NTT to Offer Inexpensive ATM Leased Line Service
  • December 1, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) said it will start an inexpensive leased line service called ATM Share Link Service and based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, as of Dec. 25.
NTT will launch the service in the three major metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The service will then be offered in other areas, where demand is expected to be strong.

A main feature of ATM Share Link lies in setting two types of transmission speed: the "guaranteed minimum rate" and the "non-guaranteed rate." For example, when a guaranteed minimum rate is set at 200kbps and a non-guaranteed rate at 1.8Mbps, a communications service can perform at a maximum of 2Mbps if the networks are not busy.

ATM Share Link changes its transmission speed depending on the level of traffic over transit networks, as also is the case with frame relay services for many corporate users.

NTT has another service of the secured rate type called the ATM Mega-Link Service. By setting both the speeds of ATM Mega-Link and ATM Share Link at 2Mbps, the former costs 236,000 yen (US$1,925) and the latter 139,000 yen (US$1,130). The ATM Share Link Service (with the guaranteed minimum rate at 200kbps) is considered highly viable in terms of costs.

The new ATM leased line service is particularly suitable for cases in which an application that generate a sizable amount of data on an irregular basis is used over networks.
