  • Sales of Desktop LCD PCs Brisk in Third Week of Nov.
  • December 14, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Desktop PCs with an LCD monitor are selling at an especially brisk pace, and reflecting the favorable trend in the PC market for individual users, the winter sales season started earlier than usual this year.
According to figures collected by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that deals with POS data of electric appliance retail stores, PC sales during the third week of November (Nov. 16 to Nov. 22) greatly surpassed sales in the same week last year (Nov. 17 to Nov. 23, 1997). Sales increased 69.8 percent in volume and rose 70.2 percent in value. In comparison with the previous week, sales rose 8.2 percent in volume and were up 7.0 percent in value. (See table).

Desktop PCs with LCD monitors are enjoying brisk sales. Thus, the week-on-week growth rates of sales of desktop PCs exceeded those of notebook PCs in volume and value for the fourth straight week.

Sales of desktop PCs in volume exceeded those of notebook PCs for the first time since the initial week of September.

The average sales price of a PC dropped by 2,620 yen from 233,643 yen (US$1,990) to 231,023 yen (US$1,970). Meanwhile, the average sales prices of both desktop and notebook PCs fell from the previous week after having posted increases for four weeks in a row.

As concerns retail prices in comparison with the same week last year, the average sales price of notebook PCs increased by 5,054 yen (US$40). Nikkei Market Access believes that this is because more customers are buying higher-performance models.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan selected the 41 firms in 1996 and has since been releasing the data.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of retail sales.
