Samsung to Invest US$8 Billion in IC Business in 1999
|
December 16, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will invest
at least 1 trillion won (US$8 billion) in its semiconductor business
in 1999 to expand its production facilities, a high-ranking Samsung
official said.

The Samsung Group's total investment for next year is estimated at 4.5
trillion won, or a 29 percent increase from the level of 3.5 trillion
won this year.
"Samsung's expansion plan is supported by the rebounding prices of memory
chips and our improved financial situation," the company official added.
He also said that Samsung will focus on 64Mb and 256Mb DRAM microchips.
The IC market will likely boom in about two years, according to forecasts
from a number of research groups.
Samsung Electronics operates nine semiconductor plants in Korea and in
Austin, Texas.
