Intel Japan, Showa Electric Team for Sales of Network Gear
|
December 15, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Intel K.K. of Japan and Showa Electric Wire
& Cable Co., Ltd. announced that they are collaborating in the marketing
of LAN switches and other network equipment.
|
Showa Electric, a major producer of electric wires and cables, will develop
services including user support services for network hardware and construction
and will sell Intel Japan's networking equipment.
Intel Japan has arranged for Showa Electric to be its first agent in
Japan responsible for sales of its products and accompanying services.
Showa Electric will take over user support for Intel's products sold
by other agents.
"The rapid expansion of the Internet and spread of intranets is stirring
up great demand for PCs, which we expect to soon reach at least a billion
units around the world. Behind these PCs, millions of server computers
will be operating," said Intel Japan president Nobuyuki Denda.
Touching on plans for Intel's network business, Denda said: "Based on
this forecast, the network business is indispensable on top of the development
and manufacturing of microprocessors. In addition to our products for
corporate users, Intel also plans to develop and sell items for consumers,
such as wireless devices for LANs."
"We have set a sales target of Intel's products at 1 billion yen (US$8.7
million) in the initial year of our partnership," said Showa Electric
president Nobuyuki Gonsho. "This amount would represent 50 percent of
the entire turnover of Showa Electric's sales of network devices. Showa
will make Intel's products the core of its network business."
