  • Japan's PC Sales in 4th Week of Nov. Reach High Level
  • December 21, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sales of personal computers to individual customers are gaining momentum, with PC sales in the fourth week of November surpassing the record high for last year's winter sales season (in the week of Dec. 29, 1997 - Jan. 4, 1998).
According to GfK Japan Ltd., PC sales at about 2,000 shops rose 21.4 percent in number of units sold and 22.0 percent in value in the fourth week of November (Nov. 23 - 29, 1998) compared with the previous week. (See table.)

GfK Japan is a data service company that handles point of sales data from large-volume retailers.

On a year-on-year basis (from the week of Nov. 24 - 30, 1997), sales rose 66.4 percent in units and 68.6 percent in value.

The average retail price was 232,270 yen (US$2,000), up 1,247 yen from the previous week's 231,023 yen (US$1,990).

Because the winter sales campaign will continue for another month, PC sales are expected to achieve a new record, surpassing that of the fourth week of March 1997 (March 24 - 30, 1997), when massive last-minute buying was seen before the consumption tax was increased on April 1, 1997.

In this winter's sales period, sales of desktop PCs are brisk. In comparison to the previous week, the growth rate in sales of desktop PCs exceeded the growth rate for notebooks for the fifth straight week.

Sales of iMac PCs under Apple Japan Inc.'s 1-percent-loan campaign are contributing to the increase in desktop PC sales. Also, choices are broadening, including desktop PCs with liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 companies. GfK Japan selected the 41 companies in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
