Shanghai to Open China's First Online Bookstore
|
December 22, 1998 (SHANGHAI, China) -- The Shanghai Book City plans to
open a Visa online bookstore in Shanghai by the end of December.
|
It will become the first company in China to sell books over the Internet.
The online shop will be jointly developed by the Shanghai branch of Bank
of China, the Bank of China Credit Card Inc., Ltd. and the Visa International
Service Association.
Internet users holding Visa credit cards will be able to visit the online
book shop's Web site and purchase items. The store will then deliver
the ordered books to the buyer's home.
The IBM standard electronic security system will be applied to the Web
site to eliminate transaction risks.
The Shanghai Book City is a 27-story building in downtown Shanghai covering
40,000 square meters of floor space. It holds more than 150,000 books,
audio and video products, and electronic publications.
