| IBM Japan Cancels 1999 Year-End Holidays to Cope with Y2K

December 24, 1998 (TOKYO) -- IBM Japan Ltd. will put its service staff
on active stand-by status to deal with any emerging Y2K computer software
problems at the time of the 1999 year-end holidays, according to Kakutaro
Kitashiro, president of IBM Japan.

Those staff members will not use their paid year-end holidays during
the end of December 1999 and beginning of January 2000. Service teams
that are to be on duty during that period will be required to take off
additional days in the summer of 1999.
IBM Japan is checking the computer systems of thousands of companies.
So far, more than 3,000 companies have had their computer systems verified
to be Y2K compliant by IBM Japan.
However, some unexpected trouble could arise around the end of 1999 and
the company's service unit will thus be on active stand-by status.
About 3,000 specialists work in the services unit, and most of them will
be affected by the special work schedule, according to Akira Tominaga,
director and general manager of IBM Japan's Professional Services unit.
