January 13, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China sold a total of three million PCs in 1997, up 40 percent over the
prior year, with sales reaching approximately RMB30 billion (US$3.6 billion), according to statistics
from the Ministry of Electronics Industry.
| Chinese companies accounted for 1.8 million units of the total, or some 60 percent of the domestic
market. The share was up five percentage points from 55 percent in 1996.
Legend Computer Corp., Great Wall Computer Corp. and other Chinese corporate brands continue to expand
in their markets. For instance, Legend sold some 400,000 PCs in 1997, doubling the figure of the
previous year.
