  • Japan's PC Sales Volume Unchanged in 2nd Week of June
  • July 6, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales at about 2,000 mass sales stores of home electric appliances in Japan during the second week of June (June 8-14, 1998) rose a slight 1.1 percent in volume and 3.7 percent in value, according to GfK Japan Ltd.
GfK is an information service company handling POS data for volume sales stores of home electronic appliances.

Rainy weather prevailed throughout the nation over the weekend of the second week of June, but PC sales showed no marked fluctuations in volume compared with the previous week (See table). The reason for the notable growth in value was that new summer models made their debut at the stores, pushing up the average sales price.

The average sales price was up 2.7 percent or 5,841 yen (US$40) from 220,260 yen a week before to 226,101 yen (US$1,620), not a very drastic hike, however.

The average sales price followed an upward trend for three consecutive weeks, but is expected to go down gradually until around the end of July, when Windows 98 pre-installed models hit the stands.

Compared with the same week a year ago (June 9-15, 1997), personal computer sales during the second week of June was up 16.0 percent in volume and up 4.2 percent in value.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms .

GfK Japan picked the 41 first in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a far greater number of outlets with combined unit -base sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
