  • NTT Studies Speedy Home Communications Service
  • July 9, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) said it started studying a new high-speed data communications service for homes and small offices.
The communication speed is asymmetric, meaning several Mbps for the downstream portion from the telephone office to user site and hundreds of kbps for the upstream portion.

This service aims to realize much lower costs and a superior quality of service as compared with the current high-speed asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology. It will guarantee a pre -set minimum bandwidth.

NTT said the new service will be implemented in those areas served by the optical-fiber network called the New Optical Fiber Access System.

Also, NTT is planning to offer ADSL service and is conducting field trials. The company hopes to provide better service than ADSL in areas with optical-fiber networks even after ADSL is commercialized.
