  • Matsushita, Microsoft Collaborate in Windows CE Technology
  • July 13, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. announced that it is cooperating with Microsoft Corp. to develop technology for combining personal computers and home audio-video products.
    Matsushita will release WebTV terminals in Japan targeted at the 199 8 winter sales season.

    The agreement has four principal segments:

    (1) Joint development of AV personal computer technology, including receiving/decoding of digital television signals.

    (2) Joint development of WebTV terminals and set-top boxes.

    (3) Porting Windows CE to the Matsushita Electronics AM33 microprocessor series, and Matsushita Electric Industrial is to sell the AM33 series worldwide.

    (4) Setting license conditions for Microsoft Windows CE.

    Microsoft is already cooperating with Sony Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. on installation of Windows CE in home appliances. CE refers to consumer electronics, according to the software giant.
