Japan's PC Sales in Third Week of June Rise Slightly
|
July 13, 1998 (TOKYO) -- According to a survey by GfK Japan Ltd., PC
sales in the third week of June (June 15-21) at about 2,000
electric appliance retail stores increased 3.1 percent from the
previous week in terms of units, and rose 2.7 percent in value.

GfK is an information service company dealing with POS data.
Compared to the same week a year earlier
(June 16-22, 1997), the unit-based figure increased by 23.1 percent
and the value-based figure rose by 8.8 percent (See table). Double-digit growth has been seen for three
straight weeks.
The average PC sales price decreased for the first time in four
weeks, falling by 931 yen to 225,170 yen (US$1,610) from the prior
week's 226,101 yen (US$1,620).
There are no signs of a major long-term increase in PC sales. A
sales boom from July to August is expected because many buyers are
looking forward to the Japanese version of Windows 98 at the end of
July. Still, observers say that consumer spending is not fully
recovering.
The data GfK Japan releases is from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms.
GfK Japan selected the 41 in 1996 and has been releasing their data
since then.
GfK Japan covers a far greater number of outlets with combined unit
-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC
shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
