  • Nokia Obtains More Business, Expands Joint Venture in China
  • July 14, 1998 (BEIJING) -- Nokia, a maker of mobile communications products based in Finland, has increased its exposure in both northern and southern China by securing more contracts and expanding a joint venture in Guangdong province.
Nokia obtained a contract from the mobile communications arm of Tianjin Telecom in Tianjin, a port city in northern China. Under terms of the contract, Nokia will supply optical-fiber transmission equipment for the city's global mobile telephone network.

The agreement marks Nokia's first order for equipment from China's telecommunications sector.

Meanwhile, Nokia recently expanded the production capacity of its joint venture in Dongguan, Guangdong province. The project enables Dongguan Nokia Mobile Telephone Co., Ltd. to expand its production to include mobile telephones.

A senior Nokia official said the latest developments demonstrate the company's commitment to increasing investments and expanding technological cooperation in China. Nokia has six joint ventures and one fully owned production base in China.
