  • Japan PC Sales Rise in Value, Units in 4th Week of June
  • July 20, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales at about 2,000 home electronics mass retailers in Japan during the fourth week of June 1998 (June 22-28) exceeded those of the preceding week in both units and value.
The rises continued for six consecutive weeks. There was a weekly 5.7 percent increase in units and a 5.1 percent increase in value, according to GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that collects point-of-sale data at home electric appliances stores.

When compared with sales of the same week of last year (June 23-29, 1997), sales increased by 15.1 percent in units and 2.7 percent in value(See table).

The average retail price of desktop PCs increased by 1,614 yen (US$12) over the preceding week, but that of notebook PCs decreased by 4,507 yen (US$32) from the preceding week. As a result, the average retail price of PCs, both desktop and notebook, decreased by 1,166 yen (US$8) from 225,170 yen the preceding week to 224,004 yen (US$1,600).

The market now is focused on how sales of PCs will increase in July, when the summer shopping season goes into full swing and Windows 98 goes on the market. Although sales decreased since the end of July 1997, they are expected to be boosted by Windows 98, which is scheduled for introduction toward the end of July.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan picked the 41 first in 1996, and has been releasing their data ever since.

GfK Japan covers a far greater number of outlets, with combined unit-base sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
