China Unicom Ends Monopoly in China's Local Phone Market
|
July 23, 1998 (TIANJIN, China) -- China United Telecommunications Corp.
(China Unicom) recently opened its first local telephone network in
the city of Tianjin, marking the end of the monopoly in the nation's
telecom market.
|
China Telecom, owned by the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications,
monopolized the market for many years. After protracted negotiations,
it agreed to allow China Unicom to provide urban telephone services.
China Unicom, founded in 1994, is the nation's second largest telecom
common carrier. Its digital mobile phone network has a total of 700,000
customers in 47 cities.
The company is preparing to offer urban telephone services in Chongqing,
a major municipality in southwest China's Sichuan province.
