Acer to Introduce XC Computer in Second Quarter of 1999
|
July 27, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Acer Inc., Taiwan's largest maker of personal
computers, is expected to introduce its first XC model in the second
quarter of 1999.
|
The company said it will target China as the product's major market.
An Acer executive said the company's first XC integrates games and education.
Acer, which also is developing a line of products for the home information
system market, introduced the first Taiwan-made DVD player in July.
The company sells the new product at a price of less than NT$20,000 (US$581),
in an attempt to make it more attractive in a market dominated by Japanese
companies. Acer said it will focus on marketing the product in Taiwan,
China and Southeast Asia.
In September, Acer will negotiate with Microsoft Corp. for a program
of cooperation involving the XC. The two companies are likely to discuss
collaboration on the manufacturing of set-top boxes, network TVs or
video game machines.
Acer's XC will sell for around RMB1,500 in China, and the company hopes
to obtain a 20 percent share of China's market for household computer
devices.
Acer also is seeking a larger presence in the home information product
market.
After a year of work with Hitachi Ltd. of Japan, Acer finished the first
DVD player fully made by a Taiwan company. Acer executives said that
some Chinese buyers have already placed orders, and the first delivery
is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.
