PC Sales in Japan Rise in 5th Week of June
|
July 27, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales at about 2,000 retailers
of household appliances in Japan rose 9.4 percent in volume and 9.2
percent in value in the fifth week of June 1998 (June 29-July 5) over
the previous week.
|
This is according to a study compiled by GfK Japan Ltd., an information
service company handling the point-of-sales (POS) data.
Those figures increased continuously for the
seven consecutive weeks on both a unit and value basis (See
table).
The sales rose by 15.6 percent in volume and by 3.8 percent in value
from the same week last year (June 30-July 6, 1997).
The average retail price decreased by 460 yen (US$3) to 223,544 yen (US$1,576)
from 224,004 yen (US$1,580) last week.
Unit sales in June are still soaring at a pace 15 percent higher than
the same week last year. Sales are showing a good start at the beginning
of the summer shopping season.
The Windows 98 launch will affect sales in the following weeks, since
customers will hold off purchases.
The growth rate in mid July is expected to decline on a unit basis from
the same week last year, and the value is expected to drop below the
level of the same week last year.
The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms.
GfK Japan picked the 41 first in 1996 and has been releasing their data
since then.
GfK Japan covers a far greater number of outlets with combined unit sales
accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about
25 percent of total retail sales.
