  • Unipac Finds Japanese Partner for TFT-LCD Technology
  • June 26, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Unipac Optoelectronics Corp., an affiliate of United Microelectronic Corp., expects to confirm within the next few days the partner from whom it will obtain technology for manufacturing thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels.
The company said recently that it will formally announce the name of its partner in August.

At the same time, Unipac denied rumors of merging with a subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., adding that it would rather establish ties with a Japanese partner.

After the technology transfer issue is settled, Unipac will become the fourth local TFT-LCD maker to cooperate with a Japanese company .

There are currently seven local manufacturers that have engaged or are preparing to engage in the production of large-sized TFT-LCD panels.

Among these, Chunghwa Picture Tubes Co., Ltd. and AOpen Inc. are obtaining their production technology from Mitsubishi Corp. and IBM Japan Ltd., respectively.

TECO, a local consumer electronics manufacturer that originally planned to enter the production of TFT-LCD panels, recently decided to drop out in light of the current market slump.

Prime View International is still searching for possible cooperation opportunities, while Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. is developing a product by itself.

Unipac last year suffered NT$800 million (US$23 million) in losses, but its small-sized LCD panels have been widely adopted by digital camera and VCD makers including E-Sonic, Umax Data Systems Inc. and Mustek Systems Inc.

Company executives said Unipac is expected to finish developing the production technology for 6.8-in. LCD panels in the third quarter of this year and break even in the fourth quarter.
