Taiwan to Emerge As Leading CD-ROM Drive Producer
|
March 10, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan is expected to become one of the world's leading CD-ROM drive
manufacturing centers in 1998, as many local makers plan to raise their production by more than 50 percent
this year.
|
Taiwan-made CD-ROM drives are projected to obtain around 40 percent of the global market this year, making
Taiwan either the world's largest or second largest supplier.
PAN International Industrial Corp. is expected to report an output of 9 million CD-ROM drives in 1998.
Lite-On Technology Corp. and Acer Peripherals Inc. both foresee annual output of 6 million units, and
Lite-On's output could reach 7 million units.
Behavior Tech Computer Corp.'s original target was set at 4 million units, but its total output could
reach 5 million to 6 million units by the end of 1998.
Advanced Information Inc. projects that its output will reach 3 million units this year.
About 75 percent of Lite-On's CD-ROM drives are made under original equipment manufacturing (OEM) orders.
By comparison, 80 percent of PAN International's sales are of its own brand products.
In 1997, CD-ROM drive output in Taiwan totaled 17.23 million units, up 26 percent from the previous year.
Output in 1998 is expected to increase by 42 percent, to reach 32.87 million units.
However, a report released by the Industrial Technology Research Institute predicted that the growth of
the CD-ROM drive market will slow after 1999, as DVD products are expected to gradually dominate the
market. It estimated that by 2000, DVD products will account for about 80 percent of the optical disc
market, with DVD-ROMs as the mainstream item.
