IEEE 1394 Exhibition Featured Displays of IP Products
|
March 12, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Japanese and international providers of intellectual property (IP)
showcased their products at an exhibition held in Tokyo, March 4 through March 6.
|
The exhibition was staged alongside the Third IEEE 1394 Technology Seminar, which was sponsored
by Nikkei Electronics magazine, published by Nikkei Business Publications, Inc.
IP refers to the individual function blocks, such as CPU, memory, and I/O interface blocks,
that comprise integrated circuits, as well as the driver software and middleware that enables
them to operate. Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) macro cells also qualify in the
IP category.
Among the major IP providers participating in the exhibition were Sand Microelectronics Inc.,
Phoenix Technologies Ltd. and Macro Designs Inc., all from the United States, Wipro Ltd. from
India, and Hitachi Microcomputer Systems Ltd.
Sand, Phoenix and Hitachi gave demonstrations using IEEE 1394 IP technology.
Sand displayed software, including device drivers, using Fire Access from Award Software of the
United States. Sand already licenses its IEEE 1394 logic synthesizable core to about 10
companies, including LSI Logic Corp.
Phoenix showed its IEEE 1394 link layer software IP, mounted on an evaluation board, using
field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) from Altera Corp.
Hitachi Microcomputer Systems used the exhibition to show that it is serious about entering the
IP business. The company demonstrated its test board-mounted IEEE 1394 link layer software IP,
using an FPGA from Xilinx Inc. The evaluation board was equipped with a VME bus interface.
In addition, Wipro announced that it will enter the Japanese market, and Macro Designs and
Zayante Inc. of the United States, revealed that they would collaborate to develop their IEEE
1394 IP businesses.
