Hacker Shuts Down JPNIC Service for Two Days
|
March 18, 1998 (TOKYO) -- The Japan Network Information Center
(JPNIC), which is responsible for issuing and managing Internet
domain names in Japan, said someone hacked into its server.
|
The incident happened on March 8. As it was a Sunday, no one was
at work and nothing was discovered until the next morning. The
target of the attack was the server for the Whois service, which
allows users to enter a domain name and retrieve information
managed by JPNIC. The hacker apparently broke into the server
through a security hole in a common gateway interface program.
To fix the security hole, JPNIC shut down its Whois service from
the morning of March 9 until 1 p.m. on March 11.
JPNIC announced on its Web site that a security breach had
occurred, and that the hole had been plugged, after the hacker
revealed the trick he had used on his own Web page.
According to JPNIC, no files were altered and no confidential
information was accessed on the server.
