Canon also announced the summer launch of
the PowerShot Pro70 (See chart.), a high-end
model equipped with a 1,680,000-pixel CCD and a powerful 2.5 x
zoom lens.
The PowerShot A5 will be priced at 74,800 yen (US$580), and the
PowerShot Pro70 at 150,000 yen (US$1,163). A total of 30,000
units of the PowerShot A5 will be produced a month.
The PowerShot A5, which comes with a body case made of duralumin
compound measuring 103mm (w) x 68mm (h) x 32.5mm (d) and weighing
230g, resembles the "IXY," a silver-halide film camera made by
Canon. The CCD is a 1/3-inch type.
Canon said that JPEG is used as an image compression method and
the recording format is the camera image file format (CIFF). A
compact flash, which is a postage stamp-size memory card, is used
as a recording medium. The standard model comes with an 8MB
compact flash card.
It is also equipped with an optical finder as well as a 2-inch
color thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD). As
an input/output interface, the camera is equipped with one
serial, one NTSC video output terminal, and one compact flash
slot.
Driver software and image processing applications will be bundled
either for Windows 95 or for the Macintosh system.
The PowerShot Pro70 is equipped with a 1,680,000-pixel, 2.5x zoom
lens. Canon said it has an iris diaphragm preference and a
minimum shutter speed of 1/8000 second. The body measures 145mm
(w) x 85mm (h) x 132mm (d) and weighs 650g. The CCD is a 1/2-inch
type.
It uses the CIFF image recording format and the JPEG image
compression method. A maximum of two compact flash cards can be
used as a recording medium. The camera can shoot about 20 photos
with one 8MB compact flash card in a high-resolution mode of
1,536 x 1,024 pixels. Also available is the mode of 768 x 512
pixels.
In addition to an optical finder, it is equipped with a 2-inch
color TFT-LCD. As an input/output interface, it has one serial,
one NTSC video output terminal, two compact flash slots, and one
remote release terminal.
