  • Acer, HK Movie Firm Team in Entertainment Software
  • March 20, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Acer Inc. and Hong Kong's Golden Harvest Group movie firm announced they will set up a company to co-develop entertainment software.
The joint venture, called Golden Acer Technology and Entertainment Ltd. (GATE), will produce video game software based on films released by Golden Harvest. Acer and Golden Harvest will each hold a 50 percent of GATE.

Relations between Acer and Golden Harvest will be more like a strategic alliance in the first stage of the cooperation program.

Golden Harvest will offer themes for video game software production.

Meanwhile, Acer can also take advantage of the more than 1,000 associated shops of Golden Harvest in Hong Kong to sell its consumer electronic products such as DVD and VCD players.

In the future, consumers will also be able to buy or rent video tapes or VCDs produced by Golden Harvest through Acer's marketing channels. In addition, consumers can buy tickets for Golden Harvest films through a global ticketing system at Acer Mall.

Acer Chairman Stan Shih also pointed out that his company plans to equip its XC products with video game software developed under this joint venture with Golden Harvest, especially those with entertainment and educational themes.

Shih added that Acer itself will develop other software for XCs, through which the company hopes to stimulate both the hardware and software businesses.

XCs are low-cost computer devices that start at US$200 and are aimed at users who cannot afford PCs.
