  • Asia/Pacific Printer Market Grew 37 Pct in 1997
  • March 20, 1998 (BOSTON) -- The Asia/Pacific printer market topped 6.7 million units in 1997, up 37 percent over the prior year, when shipments approached 5 million units, according to Dataquest Inc.
Ink jet printers buoyed the market in the region, excluding Japan. They accounted for 61 percent of total shipments in 1997.

"The recent surge of near-photographic quality ink jet printers in the US$100-US$200 range continues to heat up the competition and drive volume in large emerging markets like China and India," said Lane Leskela, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Asia/Pacific Printer and Channels program.

The four largest markets in the Asia/Pacific were responsible for 69 percent of the region's printer shipments in 1997. South Korea accounted for 23 percent of total shipments, China 21 percent, Australia 15 percent and Taiwan 10 percent.

China was the fastest-growing printer market, with 1997 shipments rising 80 percent over 1996.

The top three printer vendors in the region accounted for 70 percent of the market. Hewlett-Packard Co. kept the No. 1 position with 30 percent of the unit shipments in 1997. Epson Corp. was second with 23 percent and Canon Inc. was third with 17 percent.

Leskela said Dataquest expects total demand for printers in the Asia/Pacific region to about equal that in 1997, with about 62 percent of the market made up of ink jet printers, 18 percent by page/laser printers and the remaining 20 percent by dot matrix models.

"With the severe economic downturn in key markets this year, Dataquest expects a regional decline in end-user printer spending of about 2 percent in 1998 as compared with 1997," he said.
