  • PC Sales Growth Rate in 1st Week of Oct. Slows from 1997
  • November 2, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sales of personal computers in the week of Oct. 5 in Japan increased in volume and value as compared with the same week in 1997.
The growth rate, which recently had been in excess of 50 percent, fell in the most recent week.

According to the figures collected by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that deals with POS data of electric appliances volume stores, PC sales during the first week of October 1998 (Oct. 5 through Oct. 11) declined 0.5 percent in volume and fell 1.7 percent in value from the previous week. The growth rate was in the negative zone for the second straight week (See table).

Compared with the same period last year (Oct. 6 through Oct. 12, 1997), PC sales this year increased 37.6 percent in units and 37.5 percent in value.

Last year, the Oct. 10 national holiday was on a Friday, making for a three-day extended weekend. Therefore, the sales figures for the week with the three-day weekend cannot be compared directly to those of this year.

The average sales price declined 2,576 yen from 226,407 yen (US$1,890) to 223,831 yen (US$1,870) in the week.

Also, the average sales price, which dropped in the same period of 1997, fell only slightly this year, staying at almost the same level as in the same week last year. The average PC sales price is unlikely to fluctuate substantially in the future.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms.

GfK Japan initially picked the 41 firms in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
