  • Taiwan's Notebook PC Makers Witness Intense Competition
  • November 5, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- The ranking of local notebook PC makers witnessed a reshuffling in the third quarter of 1998 due to intensifying competition.
Quanta Computer Inc. beat Acer Inc. and Inventec Corp. to emerge as Taiwan's largest notebook PC maker. It shipped 800,000 notebooks a month in the third quarter. Acer slipped to number three.

The top five makers are Quanta, Inventec, Acer, Arima Computer Corp., and Compal Electronics Inc., and they accounted for 23.7 percent of total shipments of the local notebook PC industry.

Mitac International Corp., Alpha Top Corp., Twinhead International Corp. and Clevo Co. posted notebook shipments of between 10,000 and 15,000 units a month. Meanwhile, shipments of new competitors such as Asustek Computer Inc., Lite-on Technology Corp., Sampo Technology Corp. and Umax Data Systems Inc. remained at levels less than 5,000 units a month in the quarter.

Acer executives indicated that the company has been slow to launch new notebook products this year, as the recession is undermining demand for its products.

Local makers said that multinational PC companies will likely confine their OEM orders to firms with large production capacities and high quality.

Competition among the top five makers will become even more intense, and smaller manufacturers will likely be hard pressed to survive.
