  • ASCII, NSI Agree on Web Address Registration Service
  • November 5, 1998 (TOKYO) -- ASCII Corp. began offering Internet domain registration services on Oct. 30 in concert with Network Solutions Inc. of the United States and CSK Network Systems Corp.
The service, called "WORLDNIC-JP" (http://www.worldnic-jp.com/), is a Japanese version of NSI's enhanced registration service for global Web addresses ending in ".com," ".net" and ".org.. ASCII exclusively supports this online registration service in Japanese.

At present, most Internet users in Japan have a ".p" domain registered by Japan Network Information Center. However, ".p" domain names cannot be registered on the Web, and only one domain name is assigned to one organization. The .com, .net and .org domain names have no such limitations.

ASCII plans to offer this service mainly to individuals, small businesses or private stores planning to have electronic commerce sites. The service is offered and supported fully in Japanese, so it will become easy for those who have difficulty in English to access a Web address registration service, an ASCII spokesman said.

The service has three menus: (1) domain registration, (2) registration and reservation for future use and (3) registration and transfer service.

The service fee for domain registration is US$80 per registration and two years of use on the newly created Web server. It is recommended for users with an IP address who wish to configure a Web server as soon as possible.

The fee for registration and reservation for future use is US$119 for registratin and reservation for two years and two more years of use after the Web server is created.

The registration and transfer service has a unique menu in Japan only. It will transfer accesses made to the registered domain name over to the domain of the existing server. For example, an e-mail sent to the newly registered address will be transferred to the specified address. The fee is US$80 for registration with two years of usage and 9,800 yen (US$85) for a one-year transfer service.

ASCII's spokesman said that beside the registration service, it will offer value-added services in the near future. The company will provide accounting settlement of the registration fee in Japanese yen in January 1999 at the earliest.
