Semicon Taiwan '98 Exhibition Begins in Taipei
|
November 6, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- More than 650 Taiwan-based and foreign manufacturers
of semiconductor equipment and materials with 1,200 booths are participating
in the Semicon Taiwan '98 trade show, which started Nov. 4.
|
The
exhibition is co-sponsored by the China External Trade Development
Council (CETRA) and the Semiconductor Industry Association of the United
States.
The number of participating companies expanded significantly from 1997.
And 1,200 booths were rented this year, up 41 percent from last year's
850.
Among the companies participating in the show are Honeywell Inc., Hewlett-Packard
Co. and Shin-Etsu Handotai Taiwan Co., Ltd.
CETRA statistics indicate that the production value of Taiwan's semiconductor
industry reached US$7.9 billion in 1997, up 23 percent from 1996, and
ranking fourth in the world.
Because many Japanese and South Korean manufacturers have reduced or
ceased production since the outbreak of the Asian economic crisis, Taiwan
is expected to become the third largest maker of microchips this year.
This is in spite of the fact that most local companies also have delayed
plans to expand production.
CETRA officials said that the great potential of Taiwan's semiconductor
industry is the main reason that the large number of participants were
attracted to the Semicon exhibition this year.
