Korean Electronics Firms Tap World TFT-LCD Monitor Mart

November 12, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Korea's thin-film transistor liquid-crystal
display developers are moving to increase their facilities and tap the
world market, which is expected to grow by a whopping 170 percent annually.

After developing an 18-in. TFT-LCD monitor measuring 70mm in thickness
and 11kg in weight, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will release its product
at COMDEX/Fall 98' in Las Vegas, Nev. The show starts on Nov. 16.
As a major provider of LCD screens for big computer manufacturers including
Compaq Computer Corp. and IBM Corp., Samsung plans to increase its production
to 400,000 units by the end of this year to meet overseas demand.
LG Electronics Inc. also plans to display similar TFT-LCD monitors at
the U.S. electronics exhibition.
"The company is under negotiations with several U.S. PC makers to export
its products," an LG official said.
In addition, Daewoo Electronics Co., Ltd. will set up a production line
for a 15-in. LCD screens next year.
