[Internet Ad] Taiwan Internet Ad Market Value Estimated at US$3M in 1998
|
November 17, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Thanks to the promising outlook for the
Internet, more and more companies in Taiwan are devoting themselves
to cyber business.
|
Forecasts provided by various Web sites here indicate that the sector
will gain around NT$100 million (US$3 million) from advertisements in
1998.
According to a report released by the quasi-official Institute of Information
Industry (III), the local Internet ad market hit NT$35 million in 1997.
The III also predicts a market value of NT$100 million for this year.
PC Home Online, a Web site run by the popular computer magazine "PC Home,"
expects to take in NT$30 million from advertisements this year, exceeding
all other Web sites here.
China Times Inter@ctive, which topped the 1997 list with NT$10 million
in advertising income, is expected to gain NT$20 million in 1998.
KIMO foresees about the same amount of advertising income.
SeedNet, which is operated by state-run Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., is
expected to take in NT$7 million to NT$8 million, while TVBS and ERA
Net together will likely pull in NT$6 million to NT$7 million.
These figures, however, are only estimates, because Taiwan still has
no neutral and objective organization to monitor the industry and certify
such forecasts.
And even if they all prove to be right, a spokesman from ERA Net pointed
out, they represent only mediocre performance for the local Internet
market, which now has more than 2.3 million subscribers.
The spokesman attributed the phenomenon to the fact that the economic
slowdown has taken a great toll on the local financial and high-tech
sectors, the two major clients for Internet advertisements.
