  • November 18, 1998 (TOKYO) -- IBM Japan Ltd. introduced its mobile DVD-ROM drive XD-400 Series with a maximum 4x speed.
It will to on sale Nov. 30.

The company will roll out two models: the XD-400 featuring music CD replaying and XD-400M featuring music CD and DVD video replaying.

Both models can be used without connecting to an AC adapter via an optional Battery Station BS-32W that sells for 19,800 yen (US$160). Batteries are operable for up to 8 hours when used with the DVD-ROM drive and 3.5 hours when used in video replay mode.

Both models have replay quality of the same level as a mobile CD player, the company said.

The XD-400M is also equipped with an optical digital output terminal for audio. If connected to a device capable of Dolby surround replay, it can reproduce sound that is the equivalent of 5.1-channel theatrical surround replay.

The XD-400M also has a video cable to connect with a television, as well as a wireless remote controller.

When used as a CD-ROM drive, both models have a maximum 24x speed. They come with a PC card to connect to a personal computer, and are compliant with Windows 95/98/NT 3.51/NT 4.0.

The prices are 69,800 yen (US$570) for the XD-400 and 98,000 yen (US$800) for the XD-400M.
