IBM Japan Introduces 4x Speed Mobile DVD-ROM Drive

November 18, 1998 (TOKYO) -- IBM Japan Ltd. introduced its mobile DVD-ROM
drive XD-400 Series with a maximum 4x speed.

It will to on sale Nov. 30.
The company will roll out two models: the XD-400 featuring
music CD replaying and XD-400M featuring music CD and DVD video replaying.
Both models can be used without connecting to an AC adapter via an optional
Battery Station BS-32W that sells for 19,800 yen (US$160). Batteries
are operable for up to 8 hours when used with the DVD-ROM drive and
3.5 hours when used in video replay mode.
The main body weighs 595g for the XD-400 and 615g for the XD-400M, without
batteries.
Both models have replay quality of the same level as a mobile CD player,
the company said.
The XD-400M is also equipped with an optical digital output terminal
for audio. If connected to a device capable of Dolby surround replay,
it can reproduce sound that is the equivalent of 5.1-channel theatrical
surround replay.
The XD-400M also has a video cable to connect with a television, as well
as a wireless remote controller.
When used as a CD-ROM drive, both models have a maximum 24x speed. They
come with a PC card to connect to a personal computer, and are compliant
with Windows 95/98/NT 3.51/NT 4.0.
The prices are 69,800 yen (US$570) for the XD-400 and 98,000 yen (US$800)
for the XD-400M.
