  • Mitsubishi Electric Debuts Inexpensive 15-in. TFT-LCD Monitor
  • November 19, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Mitsubishi Electric Corp. released two TFT-LCD monitors, the RDT150S 15-in. monitor for less than 140,000 yen (US$1,160) and the RDT180S with an 18.1-in. screen.
Mitsubishi Electric said its low-priced 99,800 yen (US$830) 14-in. RDT141X TFT-LCD monitor has been selling well.

"We have been producing 20,000 units of them per month, but we are not been able to catch up with the current orders of 30,000 units solely with domestic production," said Katsuhiko Koike, general manager of Display and Imaging Products Division of Mitsubishi Electric's Audio Visual and Information Systems Group.

Although the RDT150S (See photo) has a large screen size of 15 inches, it will be put on the market with a price less than the conventional 15-in. product, the RDT151R. The RDT151R has been available for an open price, but it has been selling for 150,000 yen (US$1,240) to 190,000 yen (US$1,580). The RDT150S will go on sale for 138,000 yen. Some 10,000 units of the RDT150S are expected to be produced monthly.

The 18.1-in. RDT180S will be targeted mainly at business uses such as medical or financial institutions, CAD or design offices.

The price has been quoted at 458,000 (US$3,800). The monthly production will be 2,000 units.

Characteristics common to both products are an "Auto-adjust function" and "Display mode switch function." The analog input method has been adopted for connections.

The new auto-adjust function periodically performs adjustments of the clock, phase and horizontal and vertical positions of the screen to sustain optimal display conditions at all times. There are two types of display modes: text and graphics.

The specifications of the RDT150S are: a display area of 304.1mm x 228.1mm, 1,024 x 768 pixels and a pixel pitch of 0.297mm. The viewing angles are 70 degrees either left or right, and 50 degrees up and 70 degrees down. The external measurements are 392mm wide x 160mm deep x 374mm high. The weight is 5.6kg.

The specifications of the RDT180S are: a display area of 359.0mm x 287.2mm, 1,280 x 1,024 pixels and a pixel pitch is 0.2805mm. The viewing angles are 70 degrees either left or right, and 70 degrees up and 40 degrees down. The external measurements are 460mm wide x 220mm deep x 481mm high. The weight is 9kg.

Both the models are to be released on Nov. 25.
