  • PC Sales in First Week of Nov. Double in Volume, Value
  • November 30, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sales of personal computers in Japan in the week of Nov. 2 through Nov. 8 increased 90 percent in terms of both units sold and value, as compared with the same week last year (Nov. 3 to Nov. 9, 1997).
This was the first steep increase since the fifth week of March 1997, when demand for PCs rose due to the last-minute buying spree before the consumption tax hike was implemented in April.

According to the data collected by GfK Japan Ltd., a data service company handling point-of-sales data at large retailers of home electric appliances, PC sales at about 2,000 shops across Japan increased 22.3 percent in units and 26.9 percent in value in the first week of November 1998 compared with the previous week (See table).

The year-on-year figures show a 90.2 percent increase in units sold, and a rise of 90.1 percent in value.

Winter models of PCs appeared in shops by the first week of November, which helped sales rise to almost the same level as the week of Dec. 1 through Dec. 7, 1997. The winter PC sales campaign has already begun.

Most shop shelves feature the new winter sales models. Such replacements also pushed up the average price of PCs this week for both desktop and notebook PCs by 8,000 to 9,000 yen (US$65-US$74).

The overall average price of desktops and notebooks increased to 230,139 yen (US$1,900), up 8,322 yen from previous week's 221,817 yen (US$1,820).

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan originally selected the 41 stores in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers more outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
