Unipac Gets TFT-LCD Technology Transfer from Matsushita
|
October 7, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Unipac Optoelectronic Corp. confirmed its
strategic alliance with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., under
which the Osaka-based company will transfer to Unipac production technology
for thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels.
|
Unipac, a subsidiary of United Microelectronics Corp., will boost its
capitalization from NT$3.8 billion (US$113 million) to NT$10 billion
by the end of this year. All capital will come from UMC.
Company executives said that demand for TFT-LCD panels will expand dramatically.
Because 13.1-in. and 14.1-in. panels are the upper limit for notebook
PCs, the growing popularity of LCD monitors will increase demand for
panels of larger sizes. This will help reduce production costs by standardizing
the sizes of LCD monitors, which will make the product more affordable.
Unipac decided not to enter a joint venture with Matsushita. Instead,
it will maintain ties on the basis of technology transfer.
Other Taiwan manufacturers forming ties with Japanese partners for TFT-LCD
production are Chunghwa Picture Tubes Co., Ltd., Chi Mei Optoelectronics
Corp., Hann Star Display Corp., Prime View International Co., Ltd. and
Acer Display Technology Inc.
