Taiwan Companies to Produce DVD Pick-Up Heads
|
October 8, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Many Taiwan-based companies have indicated
interest in obtaining DVD pick-up head know-how from the Industrial
Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and some have received such technology
transfers.
|
The institute's formal technology transfer program for DVD pick-up heads
is expected to be unveiled soon.
Taiwan's production of DVD pick-up heads, DVD-ROMs and related components
will reach about NT$100 billion (US$3 billion) in 2000, according to
some projections.
The institute has developed five models of pick-up heads. Various makers
of CD-ROM products, venture capital companies and component manufacturers
have shown interest in those technologies.
Asustek Computer Inc., Behavior Tech Computer Corp., Delta Electronics
Inc., Umax Data Systems Inc., Matsushita Electric (Taiwan) Co. Ltd.
and Ultima Electronics Corp. have already obtained technology transfers
from ITRI.
Taiwan's optical disc drive production reached NT$35.4 billion in 1997,
according to the institute's statistics.
Taiwan-based companies sold about 16 million CD-ROM drives last year,
accounting for 26 percent of the global market.
Local companies expect that the DVD-ROM market will enjoy significant
growth in 1999. Thus many companies are rushing to prepare for manufacturing
of related products.
