Mustek, Delta to Team Up to Make DVD Pickup Heads
|
October 9, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Mustek Systems Inc., a producer of scanners,
will put up 60 percent of the equity in a new company to cooperate with
the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to produce DVD pickup
heads, and Delta Electronics Inc. will invest 20 percent.
|
Another technology company will invest the remaining 20 percent.
Local optoelectronics companies had relied heavily on Japanese partners
for their supply of pickup heads for the production of DVD drives. However,
ITRI developed production technology for DVD pickup heads, and the technology
is expected to boost the competitiveness of Taiwan's manufacturers.
The new company to be set up by Mustek Systems will begin mass production
within a year. It will make 6X DVD pickup heads.
While Taiwan has for several years been the world's largest manufacturer
of CD-ROM drives, it has relied heavily on Japanese companies for almost
all of the key components, including the pickup heads. The acquisition
of technology for DVD pickup heads will help Taiwan-based manufacturers
compete against industry leaders.
