Network Associates Cleans Unknown Virus in Four Hours
|
October 13, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Network Associates Inc. of Japan plans to
start a service to clean files infected by unknown computer viruses
in just four hours after users discover the virus.
|
The company is preparing to begin the service at year-end or early next
year.
With the company's anti-virus software, "VirusScan Ver.4.0," one can
e-mail files that may have a virus to a virus research team called "AVERT"
at Network Associates. At present, the team analyzes the files and periodically
distributes remedy data in a DAT file on the Web site.
The new service will directly respond to the sender of infected files
in 4 hours and send back DAT file as necessary. When it takes a long
time to analyze sophisticated unknown virus, the company will inform
the user.
The AVERT team is researching viruses 24 hours a day, so it will not
be impossible to respond in 4 hours, said Shoichi Kikuchi, general manager
of marketing at Network Associates.
A similar service has been provided by Symantec Japan Inc. Symantec said
it responds within 24 hours after receipt of infected files, and sends
back a remedy file to the user in 48 hours.
