| Acer Steps Up Presence in Software Market
October 16, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Acer Inc. Chairman Stan Shih will integrate
his company's software department with software R&D; centers in China
and the United States to form the largest software company in Taiwan.
|The new software company is expected to be officially established in
early 1999, with more than 400 employees developing software in the
areas of video conferencing, network management, personal computer basic
input/output systems (BIOS) and hardware systems.
The establishment of the new company will mark the completion of Acer's
goal of owning five software firms.
Currently, Acer Inc. owns Acer TWP Corp. for its operations in the development
of entertainment software, as well as software distribution and marketing.
In addition, Acer has set up an affiliate for Internet service and electronic
business, and a Web site that provides financial services and acts as
an online employment agent.
A venture capital company under the Acer Group that targets investment
in communications and software concerns is another of the five.
Last year, more than 20 affiliates of the Acer Group, in cooperation
with the 21st Century Foundation and local venture capital companies,
set up a fund that helped to boost the group's development in the software
It is estimated that by the year 2010, the fund will have established
more than 100 software companies, with an overall annual output of NT$100
billion (US$3 billion).
Acer also cooperated with Winbond Electronics Corp. last year on a video
conferencing program under which Acer provided video conferencing software
and Winbond offered software for communications and image chip sets.
Results of the program were exhibited in a computer show that was held
in Taipei in June.
