  • Acer Steps Up Presence in Software Market
  • October 16, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Acer Inc. Chairman Stan Shih will integrate his company's software department with software R&D; centers in China and the United States to form the largest software company in Taiwan.
The new software company is expected to be officially established in early 1999, with more than 400 employees developing software in the areas of video conferencing, network management, personal computer basic input/output systems (BIOS) and hardware systems.

The establishment of the new company will mark the completion of Acer's goal of owning five software firms.

Currently, Acer Inc. owns Acer TWP Corp. for its operations in the development of entertainment software, as well as software distribution and marketing.

In addition, Acer has set up an affiliate for Internet service and electronic business, and a Web site that provides financial services and acts as an online employment agent.

A venture capital company under the Acer Group that targets investment in communications and software concerns is another of the five.

Last year, more than 20 affiliates of the Acer Group, in cooperation with the 21st Century Foundation and local venture capital companies, set up a fund that helped to boost the group's development in the software business.

It is estimated that by the year 2010, the fund will have established more than 100 software companies, with an overall annual output of NT$100 billion (US$3 billion).

Acer also cooperated with Winbond Electronics Corp. last year on a video conferencing program under which Acer provided video conferencing software and Winbond offered software for communications and image chip sets.

Results of the program were exhibited in a computer show that was held in Taipei in June.
